Research summary
Chinese people have a long history of migration to many parts of the world since the 1960’s and 1980’s and this population are now approaching old age. There are known to be problems with their use of Western medicines and the acceptability of treatment and healthcare interventions. This study is an extension of a previous study to incorporate the views and opinions of older Chinese people (five focus groups) with heart disease in Greater Manchester and health professionals (GPs, nurses, hospital based consultants) whose views will be explored (ten to fifteen individual interviews for health care personnel) to develop an understanding of the basic processes which facilitate or act as a barrier to health care utilisation. Analysis will be undertaken through careful reading and interpretation of the interviews. Older Chinese people with ongoing health care problems related to CVD will be recruited from voluntary and statutory healthcare organisations across the Greater Manchester area. Staff will be recruited from practices or health care organisations who have contact with a significant proportion of older Chinese people.
The results of this study will generate data relating to health related help seeking process for Chinese Elders and may provide data that will facilitate the design of an intervention study aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of older Chinese people with heart problems.REC name
