Research summary
The proposed study would investigate barriers and facilitators to parents brushing young children’s teeth through the use of in-depth qualitative interviews. Purposive sampling would ensure that qualitative interviews would be undertaken with parents of children with a variety of ages and backgrounds. Interviews would explore how tooth brushing practices were established and how these practices changed with increasing age and autonomy of the child. The barriers and facilitators to parental supervised brushing (PSB) and oral health in young children would be examined and parents would be asked about the most suitable strategies to encourage and maintain PSB for young children and the most appropriate method of intervention to support such practices. These interviews would inform the next stage of the research project, namely intervention development.
