Research summary
This study aims to gain the views and experiences of children and young people with complex health, disabilities and speech, language and communication needs, and those of their families and carers, about the quality of healthcare services provided for them.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 2009) and the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 state that healthcare services must be provided taking into consideration children's ages and abilities, and the needs of their families. They recommend that feedback is obtained about the quality of the services is received.Few research studies in the United Kingdom (UK) focus on the area of children's views on healthcare services, particularly with children who have complex health, disabilities and speech, language and communication needs.
This study, undertaken over one year, seeks the views and experiences of children, young people, their families and carers in a safe environment, their school or home.
The views of around 28 participants will be gained by focus groups and individual interviews. The methodology is IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) and the method is interview.
The data will be analysed using strict ethical research principles and the findings will contribute to what is known about the quality of health services for children and young people.
This group of children is seldom heard from and questions will be asked about the following:
1. Current services
2. Treatments, effects and outcomes
3. Information available for children and young people with complex needs, disabilities, speech, language and communication needs.More studies undertaken in this field would help ensure that all children are given the chance to express and share their views and experiences.
The views gained from children, young people, families and carers may help shape and improve future healthcare and appropriate services for children and young people of all ages and abilities.
