Research summary
This was a national study of childrens’ and young patients’ experiences of hospital inpatient and day case services. Assessing childrens’/young patients’ experiences of inpatient and day case care was crucial for NHS trusts to fully understand how the quality of care could be improved for this group of patients. The last children’s and young patient survey was conducted as part of the national NHS patient survey programme in 2004. Surveying this group of patients was therefore important to address the gap in the survey programme. By ensuring that organisations carry out these surveys in a consistent and systematic way it was possible to build up a national picture of people’s experience and, with care, to compare the performance of different organisations, monitor change over time, and identify variations between different patient groups. This would in turn lead to improvements in overall patient experience.
