  • Research summary

A programme of quantitative research is proposed to investigate two outcomes in psychosis, namely alcohol use and depression. Social capital, one's sense of belonging in a community and quality of close relationships has been found to influence depression for individuals with psychosis. Recovery styles or an individual's ability to cope with symptoms of psychosis has been found to influence alcohol use in psychosis. We also know that the experience of childhood trauma has been associated with poorer outcomes in psychosis, in alcohol use, and in depression. This study has two main aims: to explore the influence of childhood trauma and social capital on depression in psychosis and the influence of childhood trauma on recovery styles and alcohol use in psychosis. Participants will be individuals with a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder who attend all acute and recovery mental health services within the South Eastern and Northern Trust. Through the use of questionnaires, participants will be asked questions related to; childhood trauma, social capital, depression, recovery styles and alcohol use. The results from this study will contribute to our understanding of how best to develop treatments that help these individuals develop alternative ways of coping with psychosis.
