Is the current organization of NHS dental services in England an impediment to the access of children? \nWhat are the attitudes and beliefs of parents and family doctors -Is good dental health perceived as an important component of overall physical health?\nWhere do family doctors see their role in dental care - what is the extent of collaboration between dentists and general practitioners particularly with regard to child health and welfare? \n\nOVERALL AIM OF PROJECT:\n\n1)To establish whether access to dental services for children is impeded on the Isle of Wight and if so, the possible reasons for this.\n2)To examine the attitudes, beliefs and experiences of parents/guardians regarding the importance of accessing and providing good dental care for their children.\n3)To examine the attitudes and perceptions of family doctors in their role in liaising with dental colleagues and the importance of good dental health in the overall systemic health and welfare of their paediatric patients.\n\nIn order to achieve the objectives outlined above, the intention is to conduct a survey of parents of children aged 4-5 years and 11-12 years.The head teachers of primary schools will be approached as a route to access and distribute the survey to parents. In addition, in order to gauge the perception and experiences of medical colleagues of dental services on the Island, the survey will be distributed to every registered General Practitioner on the Isle of Wight.
