Research summary
The CHESTY Study is an observational study looking to evaluate factors affecting the short and medium term survival and recovery from acute respiratory illness. The overarching aim is to improve outcomes for this cohort of patients in the future.
We will be assessing patients' baseline and background characteristics and preforming assessments from the time of hospital admission until 12 months from discharge. Aspects including but not limited to physical, genetic, micro-bacterial, environmental and social will be evaluated using various methods.
The study will recruit participants admitted to the Glenfield Hospital, Leicester with an acute respiratory illness or and acute exacerbation of a chronic respiratory illness. Both healthy volunteers and those with stable chronic respiratory diseases will also be sought as control groups. These control participants will be recruited from lists of volunteers who have offered to participate in research at the Leicester NIHR Respiratory BRC.
Participants will be asked to complete a range of assessments including blood sampling, sputum sampling, physical strength and performance measurement, body composition analysis (using DEXA Scan and ultrasonography) and questionnaires.
