Research summary
This is a qualitative investigation involving semi-structured one-one interviews with patients who have used the Chaplains for Wellbeing service currently provided within the wellbeing hub in Sandwell, West Midlands. This spans three Clinical Comissioning Groups (Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS CCG, Birmingham CrossCity NHS CCG and Birmingham South Central NHS CCG) Chaplains for Wellbeing are one of a range of low-level interventions for mental health being offered by Clinical Commissioning Groups in the National Health Service.
The primary aim of the research is to explore the perceived benefits and impact of the service for patients’ general health and well-being.
At present there are five Chaplains for Wellbeing undertaking this role within the ‘Sandwell hub’ in Birmingham. It is envisaged that over 50 interviews will be conducted with patients who have accessed and been discharged from the service. Patients will be recruited to ensure they reflect the religious, cultural and ethnic diversity of the population accessing the service.
Because of the small number of chaplains involved it will be necessary to preserve their individual identity preserving anonymity and confidentiality. However, it is important to ensure the services provided by each individual chaplain are captured and included in the qualitative analysis. Therefore, findings will be reported collectively and not at an individual level ensuring individual chaplains cannot be identified.
