Data collection arrangements
Patients will be approached prior to tissue removal, given a patient information sheet, allowed the time to read it and ask questions. If willing then they will be consented. A copy of the consent form will be given to the patient, filed in notes and the original sent with sample to Cellular Pathology.
Samples will be collected in theatres and outpatient clinics within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and transferred to the Cellular Pathology department at the RVI. At Cellular Pathology the samples will be logged onto the Biobank database and given a Biobank specific ID number. The samples will then be transferred to Newcastle University's Central Biobank for storage and transportation.
Research programme
The aim of the Biobank is to create a valuable resource from tissue removed from patients that would normally be discarded. This tissue would be made available to both internal and external researchers, commercial and non-commercial organisations for the benefit of patients and healthcare in general.
