  • Research summary

In this project we will develop new ways of working that will help communities, researchers and organisations work together as equal partners. Communities living in Bradford have identified the built environment, such as the areas where people live and the surrounding neighbourhood as important to health. This study will help local groups research what is positive and negative about the areas they live in and suggest improvements that might be made.

Four community organisations, from different parts of Bradford, will be supported to undertake studies of the effect of their local environment on health and well-being of people in their area. By doing this we will learn the best ways of working with communities. We will work with diverse groups to include Asylum Seekers, Eastern European Roma, White British, and Pakistani communities. The support to community organisations will include funding to help local people to undertake research activities, with support and training from researchers across all aspects of the process.

By working with four trusted community organisations who all serve different ethnic groups in different parts of the city, we will create opportunities for seldom heard groups to take a leading role in improving local matters through the application of research.

We will look at how well our community based research projects worked for each of the four partners and what changes would be necessary to make them work even better, and we will have two workshops for all the partners to reflect on their involvement. The experience gained in this study will inform our plans for the creation of a Co-production and Peer Research (CoPPeR) network. This network will provide a more inclusive participatory model of research which will be of interest to communities and organisations across and beyond Bradford.
