Research summary
Comprehensive Clinical Network proteins (CCN1-6) are a family of key regulatory signalling proteins performing important biological functions that regulate extracellular matrix (ECM) formation.
We have noticed increased ECM formation in the tunica intima of muscular arteries obtained patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This ECM is responsible for clinical diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis in CKD patients. We propose that vascular endothelial cells secrete CCN family of proteins 1-3, which are dysregulated when exposed to uremia.
This hypothesis will be tested in-vitro using Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) exposed to uremic serum from 10 patients on dialysis and 10 healthy controls without renal disease.
