Research summary
Despite advances in diagnostics and treatment, tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death from a single infectious disease globally. In England in 2019, 5.1% of people with drug-sensitive TB died. Most patients who died were already established on TB treatment at the time of death. This proposal aims to identify from what causes patients died whilst receiving TB treatment, in UK, by retrospective, observational study of TB deaths in North West England over a 20 year period (2000-2019 inclusive). Routinely collected clinical (medical records held by Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and public health (Public Health England Enhanced TB Surveillance database and TB cohort review) records and cause of death reported on death certificates will be examined. Cause of death, timing and mode of death (where known) and complications leading to death will be reported to address the current knowledge gap, with the goal of improving patient care, informing service delivery and appropriately prioritising future research.
