Research summary
Typical atrial flutter is a common abnormal heart rhythm, which is most effectively treated with radiofrequency energy delivered through wires placed in the heart using x-ray guidance. This study will assess the feasibility of performing this procedure using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance instead. This would have the benefits of avoiding harmful radiation and more accurate visualisation of the heart anatomy and radiofrequency injury.
Specific MRI-compatible catheters and associated software have been developed for this purpose. Development of this procedure may allow the techniques to be used in the future for treatment of more complex abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation.
