Research summary
Infantile idiopathic scoliosis is a curved spine in children under the age of 3 years. If untreated, then permanent damage can occur to the developing lungs and the condition is life shortening. Management in this condition is primarily around either body plaster casts or custom made plastic braces worn around the body. It is not known which is better and this study is designed to investigate this further. The study will be a comparison of a plaster cast versus a brace for infantile scoliosis, both of which are standard of care, to see which is better for the totality of care, including the correction of the spinal curve, but also the issues of comfort, compliance, skin irritation and the need for repeated general anaesthesia for the application of the cast.
