Research summary
Total hip arthroplasty is one of the most successful of all surgical procedures in terms of alleviating pain and enhancing physical function. Various implants are available to the surgeon. One of the most widely used implants is the Exeter system. The standard Exeter hip replacement stem length is 150mm. The manufacturer has recently introduced a range of ‘short’ 125mm stems to the Exeter range. These ‘short’ stems are in routine clinical usage. As part of a responsible introduction of modern implant technology however randomised studies need to compare the new 125mm stem design against the original 150mm stems to ensure the same patient outcomes are achieved.
This study is a randomised trial of 220 patients undergoing primary total hip replacement at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow. All patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty for hip osteoarthritis, aged between 45 and 80 are eligible for this study. Patients will revive either implant and be followed up by patient reported clinical outcome scores at 1 and 2 years.
