  • Research summary

This research aims to explore how national organisations work in partnership with people who have lived or living experience (PWLE) in mental health improvement programmes. The research consists of two phases - phase one has been completed and this is an application for phase two.

Working in partnership with PWLE is recognised as a key component of improvement work. However, there is little understanding in the literature of how this is manifested in practice in national organisations such as Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS). Although partnership working is recognised in HIS, there is an understanding that the organisation needs to continue to work towards ensuring consistent and meaningful engagement of people in their work. In order to address the gaps in evidence and strengthen a consistent approach, a greater understanding is required to improve partnership working in improvement programmes. The aim of this study is to better understand how HIS works in partnership with PWLE in improvement programmes in mental health services, exploring people's experiences of partnership working in a national organisation.

An exploratory case study approach will be used to address the following research question in relation to the personality disorder (PD) improvement programme:

    - What factors influence partnership working in the PD Improvement Programme?

This phase of research will consist of semi-structured interviews with participants to explore their experiences of partnership working, addressing the research question.

The interviews for this stage of research have been developed from findings in phase one (which consisted of document analysis and observations) and in collaboration with public partners within HIS.
