Research summary
Egg allergy is common in children, affecting 2-8% of preschool children. Most egg allergy is due to hen's egg. It has previously been assumed that children with hens egg allergy react to other birds eggs as well. This may not be the case. We have stories from patients in our allergy clinic suggesting that some children can tolerate duck egg whilst remaining allergic to hens egg. This has not been previously reported but is relatively common in our clinical practice. We have undertaken a formal pilot study to define this discrepancy using gold standard food challenges. The work is also considering the effect of duck egg consumption on the child's hens egg allergy. It is currently under follow-up.
This case review aims to describe the clinical features of children who are tolerant of duck egg. This may show if there is a separate group of children who have discrepant duck and hen's egg allergy.
This study will look retrospectively at patients data using clinical notes and results of previous investigations. The aim of this study is to publish a clinical case series of children who are allergic to hens egg but able to eat duck egg. This information will provide support for future research studies.REC name
