Research summary
This research project has two parts. The first involves the development and standardisation of a scale measuring guilt and shame and blame, specifically in relation to family members caring for those with mental health difficulties. This involves the development of the scale by reviewing pre-existing scales, and using expertise in this area. This will be further reviewed by carers involved in consultation groups in Mersey Care NHS Trust. Once the scale is developed, this will be standardised by undergoing a test-re-test to check for its reliability. It will also be tested against the TOSCA (The Test of Self-Conscious Affect) which is a reliable and valid scale measuring the same concepts but not relating to carers’ roles. The second part of the study involves testing its ability to predict relevant Expressed Emotion variables (Critical Comments - CC and Emotional over-involvement - EOI). These participants will complete the Guilt and Shame scale and the Family Questionnaire, once.
