  • Research summary

The research is being conducted to meet the requirements of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme at the University of Exeter.

Research question: What factors are associated with burden in minority ethnic family caregivers of dementia?

There is considerable research suggesting that minority ethnic family caregivers experience higher levels of burden compared to White British caregivers (Carers UK, 2011; Wittenberg et al, 2018), however, there is limited research considering the specific factors associated with this. This proposed study seeks to add to the current literature by exploring factors associated with caregiver burden in minority ethnic family caregivers of dementia.

In terms of study design, a qualitative methodology will be used. Open ended 60-minute interviews will be conducted with 10 participants via Microsoft Teams. Interview questions will relate to caregivers experience of providing care for a family member with dementia.

Health care professionals working in the NHS Trusts and employees in the non-NHS organisations detailed in this form will be asked to share the study recruitment poster and information sheet with minority ethnic family caregivers of dementia accessing their services or attending appointments with their family member with dementia. Participants will need to be a minimum of 18 years old, from a minority ethnic background and caring for a family member with a formal diagnosis of dementia for a minimum of 6 months or previously cared for a family member with dementia, not longer than two years ago. They must be living in the UK and be able to speak and understand English.
