Research summary
This research aims to understand the caregiver experience when supporting a spouse, friend or family member diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease who display neuropsychiatric symptoms. Symptoms include depression, anxiety, apathy, hallucinations, delusions, sleep disturbance and fatigue.
Participants will be recruited across the NHS Parkinson’s Disease pathway by frontline staff in secondary care from a city based in the north of England.
The theory underpinning this research will be Interpretivist, as the focus is the lived experience of carers. The methodology will use an Action Research approach. Qualitative data will be collected directly from groups of carers. The data will be analysed using interpretive phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This is a method that aims to understand peoples interpretations of their experiences. Data will be coded in order to maintain anonymity.
Outcomes aim to influence current practice by understanding what resources would assist carers to successfully maintain their role for longer. Secondly, the study will consider how these might be implemented along the Parkinson’s disease pathway working across organisational boundaries.REC name
