    Summary of Research

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared SARS-CoV-2 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Research has explored the mental health status of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and found symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia. Research into the experiences of inpatients with a diagnosis of COVID-19 is limited, therefore, when reviewing research from the SARS outbreak in 2003, psychiatric morbidities reported included persistent depression, anxiety, panic attacks, psychomotor excitement psychotic symptoms, delirium and suicidal ideation.

Long term continued symptoms of COVID-19 post discharge have included headache, fatigue, muscle pain and breathlessness. Additionally, muscle wastage, sleep disorders, fatigue, memory problems, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder have been found in those following discharge from intensive care units. Published patient experiences have also reported insomnia, memory loss and a sense of abandonment from medical professionals.

This study aims to explore the experiences of patients who have spent time in hospital for treatment of Covid-19, and how this has impacted on their life following discharge from hospital. Patients discharged from hospital will take part in two semi-structured interviews that will take place 3 month and 6 month following discharge from hospital. This project is a qualitative study that aims to obtain a better understanding of patients experiences of Covid-19 to provide new important qualitative insights into the needs of patients to guide appropriate interventions.

    Summary of Results

Ten participants took part in a semi-structured interview regarding their experiences of hospitalisation, and the impact on their QoL three months post-discharge.
The results identified three key themes from the interviews: Communication and the inpatient experience, Symptoms following discharge and Regaining independence. Participants discussed their negative experience of hospitalisation and how this continued to impact their emotional wellbeing post dis-charge. However, participants appeared to push themselves physically to improve their health, despite continued symptoms of fatigue and dyspnoea. Patients hospitalised following a diagnosis of COVID-19 experienced psychological distress during their hospital stay, as well as 3-months post discharge.
