Data collection arrangements
The NIHR Health Informatics Collaborative Cardiovascular/COVID-19 Theme utilises de-identified routine healthcare data captured during NHS care. The research database will include clinical, laboratory and demographic data from patients admitted to hospital who have had a troponin test, a B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) test, an echocardiogram, or an outpatient cardiology consultation.
The dataset will include de-identified routinely collected data electronic health record systems covering:
- Routine demographic data
- A&E records
- Clinical observations (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation levels etc.)
- Pathology tests (e.g. Troponin, BNP, Creatinine, Cholesterol, HbA1c, etc.)
- Echocardiograms
- Drug treatment
- Coded discharge summaries
- Outcome dataData will be collated and de-identified at each site, then securely transferred to Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust where they will be curated into research databases and accessed by approved researchers using the Imperial’s iCARE analytics environment. All data transfers to Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust will be approved by local data protection offices and Trust Caldecott Guardians under the NIHR HIC data Sharing Framework.
Research programme
The NIHR Health Informatics Collaborative Cardiovascular/COVID-19 Theme aims to enable the reuse of data captured during routine NHS care to support research into cardiovascular health. Our NHS research will enable approved researchers to access anonymised data to: 1. Explore ways of improving upon current cardiac diagnostic tools by combining different datasets (A&E, clinical observations, echocardiograms, ward movements, pharmacy administration). 2. Enhance risk stratification of patients presenting with cardiovascular disease, by identifying those in need of urgent intervention and those who could safely be discharged home and investigated further as outpatients. 3. Study the association of several clinical and procedural parameters with in-hospital and longer term outcomes. Our research aims to support care in the future by furthering our understanding of how treatments impact patient outcomes and by enabling clinicians to make more informed data driven decisions when it comes to cardiovascular disease management All researchers accessing the data will do so within the ICHT secure data environment and research projects will be approved by our Scientific Steering Committee.
