Research summary
Current published research suggests that for patients undergoing surgery, particularly if they are at high risk of complications, goal-directed fluid therapy with cardiac output monitoring may lead to better outcomes. Less invasive forms of cardiac output monitoring are becoming more commonly used, however there has been no published evidence of the differences in haemodynamic parameters before and after the induction of a general anaesthesia using these monitors. It may be that if there is a significant difference seen in stroke volume and stroke volume variation in healthy patients before and after a general anaesthetic, this will change the current recommendations for timing of monitoring and initiation of fluid replacement.
