Research summary
Anthracycline medicines are effective cancer treatment, but cause an important side-effect: damage to heart muscle cells. Echocardiography has been used to monitor the general heart function of patients anthracycline treatment, but until now, the only direct method of assessing the muscle cell damage has been a biopsy of the heart muscle.
