Research summary
Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is a slowly progressive, destructive, and hampering form of lung infection. Infection is usually but not exclusively caused by breathing in spores spread by Aspergillus fumigatus fungus found in the environment. CPA complicates individuals with a history of pre-existing or co-existing lung conditions and is associated with notable morbidity and mortality worldwide. Patients may also present with life-threatening symptoms that require long-term treatment and monitoring, which can significantly impact patients’ quality of life. Thus, monitoring symptoms and assessing Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) add importance to determining the effectiveness of therapy, which can be used to understand the impact of the disease on health status and daily life. However, currently used measures of HRQoL in CPA are not disease-specific, so they may not accurately reflect therapeutic efficacy and are often challenging to implement routinely into clinical and research practice due to the length of items, scoring complexity, and inclusion of broad domains. Therefore, developing a disease-specific HRQoL score is important to efficiently quantify the impact of CPA on health status and enable HRQoL endpoints for clinical monitoring and research settings. In summary, through this study, I will assess the impact of CPA on health status and well-being by developing a disease-specific HRQoL and determining its application in CPA prognosis and monitoring.
