Research summary
The International Agency for Research on Cancer have classified work in the rubber manufacturing industry as definitely causing cancer. However, there exists a great deal of uncertainty as to which specific chemicals present in the rubber products manufacturing process give rise to the increases in cancer that have been seen to date. Out study sample consists of some 40,000 workers aged 35 or over who worked in the industry in 1967. We will follow these workers up over time to ascertain their death and cancer incidence rates for comparison with estimates based on national population rates. In addition, we will carry out a detailed historical exposure assessment that will allow assessments of whether any risks are associated with increasing exposure to different chemicals encountered in the industry.
