Research summary
More people are living with and beyond cancer and, as people live longer, are more likely to have additional long term chronic illness as well. Not enough is known about the experience of living with cancer at the same time as one or more other chronic illness such as diabetes, heart disease or mental ill health, and the impact this has on individuals, their quality of life, and how they interact with doctors and nurses and use health services.
This study aims to explore the unmet needs of people living with and beyond cancer with other chronic illness and their informal carers and consider how to better support people in this position, and those caring for them professionally.
This study will speak to people to find out in their own words how it is to experience this; for the patient themselves, and the main relative or carer alongside them. Health professionals working in general practice and specialists at the hospital will also be asked about their views and experiences of working with and caring for these patients and their families. The findings from this study will tell us more about how we can change services to better provide for people after a cancer diagnosis when they are also managing other long term illnesses.
