Research summary
This pilot study will investigate the effects of intermittent fasting on weight and diabetes in obese, type 2 diabetics in Swindon.
Background: Type 2 diabetes has reached alarming levels in the UK. Interventions focus on weight loss in an attempt to tackle this growing issue. IF is a concept that may play a role in achieving a reduction in the number of individuals being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Aims: The year long pilot study aims to determine whether 8 weeks of IF will induce remission of type 2 diabetes.
Method: Participants will follow the IF diet for 8 weeks; 2 non consecutive fast days and 5 days when participants will consume their normal habitual diet. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements will be collected throughout the study to assess progress.
Results: Investigators anticipate that the diet will induce remission of type 2 diabetes as a result of weight loss in obese type 2 diabetic patients.
Conclusion: The results from the study will contribute to developing the obesity service at the Great Western Hospital and provide a valuable contribution to the body of evidence investigating IF.REC name
