  • Research summary

Clinical staff working in hospital emergency departments are often faced with difficult situations, which can be traumatic to them. As a result, staff members are likely to experience memories of these incidents, which ‘pop into their mind’ unexpectedly, are distressing and can impact on staff performance. There is currently very little support for staff who may be struggling with repeated memories of traumatic events which they experienced at work. An intervention which has been found to be effective at reducing these memories is a task that involves bringing to mind the memory and then playing the computer game Tetris. The current study aims to test this intervention in a group of 8-12 staff members working clinically in the emergency department. It also aims to investigate how helpful, feasible and acceptable this intervention is to them. \nThis study is funded by the Oxford Institute for Clinical Psychology Training and Research, and the University of Oxford John Fell fund.
