  • Research summary

Self-isolation is an important step in stopping the spread of Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Self-isolation requires people who have had contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus and those who develop symptoms to stay at home and avoid all contact with other people for a specific period of time. Adherence to self-isolation relies on people understanding what they are asked to do, having confidence that they can do it, and overcoming barriers that might prevent them following guidance. The aim of the CABINS study is to establish and understand the enablers, barriers, risk factors and the underlying reasons for adherence to self-isolation guidance. It will answer the following questions:

    1. Which social groups are at highest risk of non-adherence to self-isolation guidance?
    2. What are the social, economic, physical, and psychological barriers to self-isolation amongst notified contacts?
    3. What communications or interventions could support increased adherence to self-isolation guidance among groups with higher levels of non-adherence?

The CABINS study uses mixed methods including a Telephone Survey and Online Focus Groups/Interviews. Study participants are contacts of positive cases of Coronavirus recorded in the Test, Trace, Protect database that supports contact tracing in Wales. Two waves of an anonymous 15 minute telephone survey will be conducted in October 2020 and November 2020, with 1,000 participants in each wave. Eight (60 minute) focus groups with six participants each and 12 (45 min) individual in-depth interviews will be conducted between October and December 2020 with survey respondents to explore enablers and barriers to self-isolation in more depth.

The CABINS study will provide vital behavioural insights to support Public Health Wales’ health protection response during Autumn/Winter when community transmission increases, and contribute to international learning through sharing of study findings. It will inform communications and interventions to increase adherence to self-isolation and stop the spread of Coronavirus. [Study relying on COPI notice]
