Research summary
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a complex and progressive disease. After diagnosis, patients can be treated by diet alone. However, as the disease progresses it needs additional treatment with one or two and sometimes with three different hypoglycaemic agents (blood sugar lowering medicine). However, despite all medication, diabetes may remain poorly controlled and blood sugar levels and HbA1c level (a test to measure long-term diabetes control) remains elevated. This is when most patients with T2DM are started on insulin, with or without tablets (hypoglycaemic agent).\nHowever, it is not known which patient’s diabetes control will improve once started on Insulin. We therefore want to carry out a special blood test on patients who are ready to go on insulin to determine if this blood test will help to guide insulin treatment. \nThe study will be conducted at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for a period of 12 months
