Research summary
This study aims to determine the cough relieving effects of butamirate versus placebo and dextromethorphan, which is known to be effective in reducing the symptoms of coughing. The research may produce relief for many individuals, as mild coughing is the one of the main symptoms of the common cold.A group of drugs called the opioids, that includes codeine are currently used to treat the symptoms of coughing, however there is a need to develop treatments that do not produce the adverse effects associated with the opioids.Healthy male and female subjects between 18 and 65 years of age will be screened to determine whether or not they are eligible. The study will take place at the Castle Hill hospital in Hull England and will last approximately 9 weeks from screening to post study follow up visit.
