Research summary
Burnout in healthcare staff has been found to have a far-reaching impact including reduced quality of care (Salyers et al, 20017), increased absenteeism and staff turnover (Firth & Britton, 1989). Much research has been carried out within mental health settings however, there is currently limited research on the experiences staff within acute mental health inpatient rehabilitation settings. It is hypothesised that staff in these settings may experience different stressors and protective factors (such as longer admissions, different caseloads and staff turnover). Understanding the unique experiences of burnout and wellbeing within this cohort may support the development of tailored interventions, leading to a positive impact for both staff and patients.
To explore this further, this study will speak to staff across three health boards within South Wales regarding their experiences of burnout and wellbeing. Those wishing to participate will be provided with detailed information about the study. Those who are selected to participate will be asked to complete a demographic sheet (collecting information such as name, age, working hours etc) and a study consent form. People who do not need to know participant information will not be able to see their identifiable information.
Participants will engage in an interview about their experiences of burnout and wellbeing. Interviews will last up to one and a half hours and will take place remotely or at a convenient and safe location within the grounds of their place of work (in line with government and NHS guidance).
All of those who participate in the interviews will be entered into a prize draw to win high street vouchers.
Data from the interviews will be pooled, anonymised and analysed using Grounded Theory. It is hoped that themes from this data will contribute to the research base and help inform tailored support for staff within inpatient mental health rehabilitation settings.REC name
