Research summary
There is increased end stage kidney disease (ESKD) in people living with HIV (PLWH) and the numbers of these patients requiring kidney transplants is increasing. Those who have successful transplants have an increased risk of skin disease, including skin infections and malignancy (which may be of viral or non-viral aetiology). This increased risk is associated with both their HIV status and immunosuppressant medication. National UK guidance suggests that PLWH who receive kidney transplants should be under routine skin surveillance in a specialist dermatology clinic. However, the burden of skin disease and skin health needs of PLWH who have received kidney transplants, liver transplants or other organ transplants, is not well documented. Our aim is to perform a multi-centre observational study to assess the burden of skin disease in PLWH who are also organ transplant recipients.
