Research summary
This is a multi-centre longitudinal study including limited clinical data collected in 11 European countries. This submission is to seek ethical approval to conduct data collection in the UK site, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospitals.
People with severe asthma experience symptoms that are difficult to manage despite taking high doses of medications. They experience frequent asthma attacks that require admission to hospital for one or more days. Some of the medications, such as the steroid tablet prednisolone, can cause side effects in both the short and long term. People with severe asthma are often unable to work or take frequent sick days.
Research into severe asthma has been limited by the lack of patient reported outcome measures suited to this population. Greater knowledge is also needed on how the quality of life of these patients may change throughout the year, e.g. when experiencing summer allergies or winter viruses. The Severe Asthma Questionnaire (SAQ) is a health related quality of life questionnaire developed specifically for patients with severe asthma. In this study participants will be asked to complete the SAQ once a month for 12 months, alongside other questionnaires, to assess change in their asthma specific quality of life over time.
Participants will be recruited from RD&E’s severe asthma clinic, and asked to complete a series of questionnaires using a smartphone app, PatientCoach. The questionnaires will assess disease specific quality of life (the Severe Asthma Questionnaire), general quality of life (EQ-5D-5L), Asthma Control (ACQ), ability to work (ICECAP-A and WPAI) and depression/anxiety (PHQ-2/GAD-2).
The main aims of this study are to:Assess the burden of living with severe asthma on HRQoL in a European population.
Further validate the SAQ within a European population.
Assess the feasibility of the PatientCoach app to collect data from patients.REC name
