Research summary
The purpose of this study is to administer allergen by inhalation (i.e. allergen challenge) to monitor irritation in the person lungs. Allergen challenge involves inhaling a solution of one of the common things which people are allergic to, these are either, House Dust Mite, Grass or Cat Hair (called allergens). We then study how it affects their blowing tests and other measurements of airway inflammation. Allergen has been used in many other studies to cause a short-lived immune response by the body. In this study we are interested in the response of the lungs to allergen in asthma participants. Volunteers given allergen by inhalation all recover fully within 24 hrs. The purpose of this study is to administer allergen and analyse sputum (phlegm) and samples obtained via bronchoscopy to assess the inflammatory cells in your lungs. The study is single centred and involves 3 visits to the unit for screening, allergen challenge and two bronchoscopies.
