  • Research summary

Suicide rates are high in people with bipolar disorder. We want to evaluate a new talking therapy called the Broad-Minded Affective Coping (BMAC) intervention to help with suicidal thoughts. It is brief, structured, and easily used by mental health services. The BMAC asks people to revisit and focus on positive memories and experiences. This may help people to break out of cycles of suicidal thinking.

We want to pilot the BMAC in 12 people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Participants will be contacted by their mental health team about taking part. All participants will receive up to two sessions of risk assessment and signposting. They will then receive up to six sessions of the BMAC. Participants will be asked to complete some measures before and after the intervention. They will also give us feedback on how they found it and how it might be improved. This will help to
    plan a larger study.
