  • Data collection arrangements

The British Hernia Society is the UK's national registry for hernia surgery. We aim to to keep a secure record of every hernia operation performed in the UK, so that we can better understand what operations are being performed and how.

For each operation we will record information which is routinely recorded by hospitals and surgeons. This is information about how the operation was performed (including details of any implants or meshes), and relevant information about the hernia and the patient who had the operation. This information is entered by the patient's surgeon.

This information is completely anonymous, unless we have the patient's consent to record their personal details (such as NHS number and date of birth). We ask this so that we can link the operation securely to any future information entered by the patient, their surgeon or another secure database to answer important questions.

We also ask consent from the patient for their contact details so that the registry can ask them some questions from time to time about their experience, satisfcation and whether they have had any problems. We do this via app, email or post.

  • Research programme

The Registry primarily exists so that we can understand what operations are being performed, how and what the experience and outcomes are for patients. By collecting this information we will be able to understand whether there are any differences in what operations patients have and their outcomes, so we can standardise care for patients to improve their outcomes. By undertaking research on this information we will be able to do this much more effectively. We will be able to ask questions and answer them, for example finding out if one operation is better than another for certain patients. We will also be able to better understand how operations help patients, and look for ways to predict this. The amount of information we will have makes this a hugely powerful resource for research to improve care for our patients.
