Research summary
Cancer of many types commonly spreads to the lining of the lung causing flud collection (pleural effusion) which is associated with breathlessness and has a negative impact on the quality of life of cancer patients. Simply draining thflud away is not a long term solution as it almost always returns and other commonly used treatments have disappointing success rates and safety profiles. This trial will examine whether a promising drug (Zoledronic Acid) that's already used successfully to protect the bones of cancer patients can reduce the amount oflud produced in the lung lining of cancer patients with the potential to reduce the number of procedures (such as chest drains and needles inserted between the ribs to draiflud) that patients require in the future and improve breathlessness and quality of life. This is an initial pilot study.
