Research summary
Bronchiectasis is a common, disabling respiratory condition and the number of people affected in the UK is increasing. There is a need for more research into the pathophysiology of the disease to allow for better patient management and the development of new therapies.
This study aims to phenotype and endotype bronchiectasis at a molecular level giving key information for the development of new therapies and to allow better targeting of existing therapies within patient groups.
By completing a comprehensive assessment of bronchiectasis, and comparing a group of patients with healthy volunteers, the four key parameters of the disease will be examined: Infection, inflammation, epithelial dysfunction and airway structure damage. This will be a single centre, observational study recruiting around 80 bronchiectasis patients from NHS Tayside and comparing them to around 40 matched healthy volunteers. All participants will be over 18 years and have given informed consent.
The patient group will be recruited from NHS clinics or from the EMBARC bronchiectasis registry (with consent to contact for research). The healthy volunteers will be from the Tayside area and may be invited by letter through previous agreement to participate in research, such as the SHARE registry, via adverts placed in public areas such the hospital, via publicity, or as relatives of patient participants.
Participants would attend on 2 occasions to complete all the assessments within a 2 week period. No follow up in person is required.
A comprehensive range of assessments will be completed: medical history and medications, height and weight, vital signs, physical exam, ECG, CT chest, bronchoscopy with biopsies, lung function tests, bronchial challenge, symptom questionnaires and sample collection (blood, sputum, urine, stool, nasal brushing, oral wash, lung biopsies). All current health and safety procedures for Covid 19 will be followed, including testing if required.
Recruitment should take around 18 months to complete.
