Research summary
Our previous research has shown that patients often described detriments in functionality and in psychological and social well-being during the hospital to home transition period post lower limb amputation. Thus a ‘gap’ exists, making the transition from hospital to home a vulnerable time in the care continuum. At present, there is limited research on the hospital to home gap and consequently, using a qualitative approach, this research asks: ‘What are the experiences of patients? What are the experiences of patients’ support providers? And ‘how might we best support these transitional experiences?’
In line with the research aims, two groups of people are be eligible to participate in this study: 1) patients who have experienced the hospital to home transition post amputation, 2) individuals who have acted as a support provider for a patient during this transition (e.g., wife, husband, partner, parent, friend). Participants who have experienced this transition at least 6 months prior will asked to take part in two semi-structured interviews. The first interview will be dyadic, involving both the patient and their support-provider and will aim to understand their joint experience. Following this, each participant will also be invited to take part in one individual interview. Results from this study will be used to provide practical recommendations and/or resources to improve the hospital to home transition post amputation.
