Research summary
Visual field loss is a common complication of temporal lobe surgery and stroke. Brain changes after visual loss contribute to recovery, but the changes underlying recovery are not fully known. Also, some patients have residual vision in areas of visual field that seem to be completely blind. In this study we will examine visual loss and residual vision in patients known to have visual loss after temporal lobe surgery, and relate this to brain changes studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These changes will be related to changes measured using the same experiments in patients following stroke causing visual field loss.
