  • Research summary

It is estimated that between 2014- 15 and 2016-17 22% (117/531) of adults with alcohol dependency in North Tyneside living with children received treatment compared to National estimates of 21%, with the unmet need sitting at 78%.
Parental Alcohol misuse (PAM) is prominent in child protection cases, child concern notifications and domestic abuse incidents in North Tyneside. In addition, there are a large number of children on the edge of care and high school exclusions.
Alcohol is one of nine strategic priorities for the North Tyneside Health and Wellbeing Board as set out in the Board’s work plan 2018-2020. The Board acknowledges the considerable negative effect on children, young people and the family that parental alcohol misuse has in North Tyneside

North Tyneside has been awarded children of alcoholic parents’ innovation funding to increase capacity of staff to identify children affected by PAM and to support both the children and parents to receive support to reduce the impact of alcohol misuse. The project will build upon the strengths based, family centred early help approach, already familiar across North Tyneside, introducing the whole system referral pathway for those in direct contact with families and will be included within induction and CPD training.

The team is conducting an evaluation of services. This will consist of a gathering both quantitative and qualitative data:
    Quantitative data:
    • Data on numbers of children and adults (parents and affected family members) accessing the innovative interventions
    • Completion of pre and post intervention questionnaires.

    Qualitative data:
    • Focus groups with key stakeholders
    • In-depth qualitative interviews with parents, affected adult family members and children access the innovative interventions.
