Research summary
The Born in Bradford Better Start (BiBBS) cohort study will recruit babies born in three areas (wards) of Bradford (Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton), and their mothers and partners from 2016 until 2021. In total, 6,000 babies will be recruited. The study population is ethnically diverse with a high proportion of families of South Asian origin. BiBBs is a collaboration between the Born in Bradford team and Better Start Bradford. Born in Bradford is a cohort study that has successfully been following up over 13,500 children and their families in Bradford since 2007. Better Start Bradford is a Big Lottery funded programme that aims to improve children’s health and wellbeing in some of the most deprived areas of Bradford by offering a variety of projects to pregnant mums and 0-3 year olds. BiBBS is an experimental birth cohort that will monitor and evaluate the effects of the Better Start Bradford projects on children’s social and emotional development, communication and language development, and nutrition and obesity. \n\nThe BiBBS cohort will follow families living in the Better Start Bradford areas from pregnancy and as the child grows up. Pregnant women and their partners will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their health, wellbeing, family and social and economic circumstances. Physical measures (e.g. weight), blood samples (mother and umbilical cord blood), urine (mother) and saliva (partners) will also be collected. Each families’ participation in the Better Start Bradford projects will be tracked, and BiBBS will follow families as the child grows up through linkage with routinely collected data, including GP, health visitor and hospital records, dental records, health and education data collected by schools, and data from the Local Authority, including children’s services.[COVID-19 amendment – 17/04/2020] We recently received approval of Amendment 5 to complete a survey with BiBBS parents regarding the impact of the coronavirus Government response. s noted in our covering letter we have now made some amendments to the wording of this survey to align it with other national surveys, and also added in some additional questions as requested by the Bradford District GOLD command for the coronavirus response (need for, access to and satisfaction with key services; an additional question on partner relationship to capture conflict; adding two final questions on challenges and enjoyable experiences during the lockdown. These new questions and slight re-wording are highlighted in the BiB Covid19 Questionnaire Version 2.0In order to keep the questionnaire manageable we have also removed a number of questions (Compliance with coronavirus lockdown, WEMWEBS wellbeing questions, child activities, final questions of employment and financial security sections, income in previous 3 months). These are highlighted in the previously approved BiB Covid19 Questionnaire Version 1.0_Changes.n Amendment 5 we highlighted our plans to also do a survey with BiBBS participants who are currently pregnant. This questionnaire has now been devised and is submitted here as Pregnancy Questionnaire Version 1.0, along with some minor amendments to the survey protocol (now V2)
