  • Research summary

Born in Bradford is an internationally recognised research programme following the health and well-being of over 12,500 mothers, 3000 fathers and 13,500 children in Bradford. Families were recruited to the study between 2007-2010. A key goal of BiB has been to utilise routine data and work closely with public health partners and health practitioners to translate research into practice. The proposed study will allow us to maintain and build on these important collaborations. We have secured prestigious funding from the Medical Research Council, and Economic and Social Research Council to re-visit all our families and conduct a new wave of data collection when children are aged between 6-9 years old. Between 2016-2019 we will recruit 9,000 BiB mothers, 5,000 BiB partners (biological or non-biological carers of children) and 9,000 BiB children to attend a follow-up assessment aboard our ‘Big BiB Bus’, at local community venues, or in families’ homes. Our trained researchers will administer detailed questionnaires and conduct physical assessments which will include measuring height and weight, taking blood and saliva samples, and using a body scanner to assess body fat distribution, and bone density. This new wave of assessments will allow us to explore how lives have changed for our families and help us answer important questions about what factors influence health, well-being and educational attainment. Ultimately, our research will be used to help policy makers, health professionals and educationalists improve service provision locally and nationally, based on rigorous evidence. The current application includes a small pilot phase where we will talk to families about our study materials (information sheets and questionnaire) to ensure they are acceptable and clear. Any suggested changes to documentation will be resubmitted as a substantial amendment to Leeds Bradford REC prior to full recruitment. [COVID-19 amendment – 20/04/2020] We have now made some amendments to the wording of this survey to align it with other national surveys, and also added in some additional questions as requested by the Bradford District GOLD command for the coronavirus response (need for, access to and satisfaction with key services; an additional question on partner relationship to capture conflict; adding two final questions on challenges and enjoyable experiences during the lockdown. These new questions and slight re-wording are highlighted in the BiB Covid19\nQuestionnaire Version 2.0\nIn order to keep the questionnaire manageable we have also removed a number of questions (Compliance with coronavirus lockdown, WEMWEBS wellbeing questions, child activities, final questions of employment and financial security sections, income in previous 3 months). These are highlighted in the previously approved BiB Covid19 Questionnaire Version 1.0_Changes, attached here. n Amendment 7 we highlighted our plans to also do a survey with BiB Growing-Up children. This questionnaire has now been devised and is submitted here as Child Questionnaire Version 1.0, along with a child appropriate invitiation letter V1.0
