Research summary
When a patient has an overactive thyroid gland, both their body image and their body shape alters due to increased thyroid hormones in the bloodstream resulting in weight loss. Treatment of an overactive thyroid gland involves reversing this process during which time any weight lost may be regained. The aim of this study is to examine both the patients perception of these alterations and the objective change in body shape and how this may impact on the patient's quality of life.
When a patient opts to have their thyroid gland removed to cure their overactive thyroid disorder, they will be asked to complete a body image questionnaire. This will be completed again 3, 6, 9 and 12 months post surgery when they are on an appropriate dose of thyroxine to replace that which would normally be produced by the thyroid. They will also have their body size and shape objectively analysed preoperatively and 3,6,9 and 12 months postoperatively. Both subjective and objective change will be compared. This group of patients will be compared to an age/sex matched group of euthyroid patients (those without thyroid hormone imbalance) who present to the ENT clinic for other reasons (such as a goitre).REC name
