Research summary
The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between body composition and diet, training and competition in Scottish rugby players at various levels. The study will monitor body composition changes at club and national level and will include age-grade players. Players will be recruited through their rugby club or through the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU), for those involved at national level. The study will run over a rugby season and will attempt to include as many players as possible. Players will be scanned about two months apart during a period of competition to monitor body composition changes. National players also will be scanned after the 6 Nations Competition. As well as characterising the body composition of Scottish rugby players at various levels, the study will be able to look at the impact of competition on individual body composition. Players at an an age-grade level, either U18 or U20 depending on the club structure, will be included also. Players will be asked to keep a detailed record of their food and drink intake and their activity at various points in the season. National players will complete one of their food diaries while they are in a monitored ‘camp’ environment. Dietary analysis data will complement the body composition data obtained from the DEXA scans. The information gained from the scans and dietary analysis will allow the comparison of body composition between club and national level and also between senior and age-grade players at different levels.
