Research summary
Whole blood is routinely collected from volunteers and supplied to laboratories for the purpose of research, which is essential for the development of safer and more effective drugs. This blood donation will be conducted at Richmond Pharmacology Limited (RPL) and is sponsored by Immunocore Limited (hereafter referred to as Immunocore) who will conduct the research outlined below.
The blood donations collected from volunteers will be processed and used to derive T cell clones and we may isolate the DNA. Eventually the engineered DNA could form the basis of a new drug, treatment or means of diagnosing disease; and could also potentially be used to test the safety of new drugs or treatment in the laboratory.
As part of these studies, it is very likely that we will assess Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) type. HLA, like blood groups A, B and O, are a set of markers on cells and are tested as standard to match donor and recipient for organ donation. Other tests in support of medical research may be conducted but Immunocore will never knowingly conduct a test where the results may have medical implications for the volunteer.
This research project will involve blood collections from up to 500 healthy volunteers. RPL will be responsible for the recruitment and accommodation of the healthy volunteers in their Croydon University Hospital unit overnight (the afternoon/evening before the scheduled blood collection). RPL will also be responsible for checking that it is safe for volunteers to give blood, taking the blood collection and supplying the blood samples to the Sponsor Immunocore, who will pay RPL for the services provided.
