Research summary
This is a blood collection study in which up to up to 450mL of whole blood will be collected from up to 500 patients with specific medical conditions of interest.\n\nWhole blood is routinely collected from healthy volunteers for the purpose of research. Blood contains certain immune cells, known as Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) that help the body develop an immune response against infections. Some of these cells have certain genetic markers (HLA types) that tell them how to respond to certain infections. These genetic markers can vary greatly between different people. The use of PBMCs from patients with certain diseases will now allow additional disease-specific factors (such as how the disease impacts the immune system and the impact of patient genetics and concomitant medicines) to be taken into account.\n\nIn developing new drugs and vaccines it is important to test them on as wide a population of individuals as possible. However, testing potential drugs and vaccines on human volunteers (especially those with medical conditions) carries a safety risk. The immune cells isolated from the blood of these patients can be used to represent the target population. The use of PBMCs from patients with a specific diseases allows an in vitro assessment of the product in a fully human system as close as possible to a clinical trial in that specific medical condition. This enables research into the safety and effectiveness of drugs and vaccines to be carried out on a patient population in the safety of the laboratory and therefore avoids the exposure of patients to such research. \n\nPatients will be admitted to the unit the day before the blood collection. Through safety assessments will be performed before and after donation to ensure it is safe for them to donate blood and be discharged, respectively.\n
