Research summary
Why? To determine the biological and genetic basis in patients with complex allergic, inflammatory and immune disorders presenting to NHS clinical services in order to more effectively treat these patient's disease. Precise definition of the exact basis of patient's disease will allow clinicians to provide more accurate diagnoses and prognoses as well as treatment strategies for their patients.
Who is eligible? All patients with severe infections, inflammatory or allergic diseases, where the precise causes and biological basis of their disease has not been clearly defined by standard NHS tests and published knowledge. Because these diseases are likely to be genetically inherited and may impact on immediate family (parents and siblings), where clinically appropriate, parents and siblings will also be invited to participate in the study, whether symptomatic at the time or not.
Where? The study will be conducted at the University of Manchester on patients (both children and adults) being investigated and managed within clinical services at the Manchester Foundation Trust.
How? Clinical information regarding the patient's disease will be collated from patients and family members presenting with unusual and severe allergic and immune diseases. Blood, and where indicated skin and bone marrow will be taken for immune and genetic testing. This study will continue long-term as progress in understanding and therefore management of patients with complex immune disorders is an ongoing process.REC name
